Over time, the unchecked growth of vegetation had closed off the narrow paths separating the enclosed gardens bordered by boxwood. The garden’s redesign provided an opportunity to create ‘La Tangente’, a long, diagonal path opening out onto the sun-drenched orchard; ‘L’Echappée belle’, leading towards the moat; and ‘La Coulée verte’, running alongside the stream; and to enhance various spaces with light installations or changing displays that bring out the spirit of the place.
Whilst a garden—a ‘living and fragile monument’—cannot be frozen in time, it is possible to preserve a few of its marvellous fleeting moments through the photographs and stories it inspires in those moved by its history, its grace, its ‘little follies’ and its wisdom. One of the future prospects for *Un jardin philosophe* could well take the form of a ‘landscape’ book…
This weekend’s programme:
- Friday 18 September: 4.00 pm, guided tour by the owners, no booking required. Gates open at 4.00 pm, close at 4.15 pm, tour starts (duration: approx. 2 hours).
- Saturday 19 and Sunday 20, open continuously from 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm. Self-guided but structured tour (signage, information sheets in French, German and English). Musical entertainment.
