Built between the 10th and 13th centuries and surrounded by the Vosges forest, Guirbaden is situated 1 km from the village of Mollkirch, on the hills overlooking the Bruche Valley. It is the largest of the castles in Alsace (2 hectares) and certainly one of the oldest.
The ‘Sauver le Guirbaden’ association, founded in April 2015, is offering a packed programme for the European Heritage Days:
- Medieval encampment with a knight’s costume display at 11.00, 13.00 and 15.00,
- Demonstration of medieval calligraphy
- The art of braiding
- Exhibition of builders’ tools, photographs and old lithographs
- For children: a treasure hunt around the castle and other wooden games, such as: coconut shy, crossbow shooting, skittles and the spinning top. (Games pass: €5)
A medieval encampment will be set up to take you back in time: tents, weapons and shields, a demonstration of how to make chainmail, a chair and a bed, tableware… with volunteers dressed in medieval costume.
Make sure you wear walking shoes and keep your eyes peeled!
A selection of medieval snacks will be available on site
