‘Interwoven Melodic Fragments’ – Ensemble Contre le temps
Guided by the fragile traces of musical fragments from the 13th and 14th centuries, this programme begins where history unravels. Snippets of melody — sometimes faded, incomplete, or abandoned before they were ever fully finished — form the heart of this exploration: each fragment is sung exactly as it appears in the manuscript, then developed through the artistic processes unique to the Ensemble Contre le temps. For this programme, the ensemble has chosen to collaborate with the artist Francesca Gaza. This composer, instrumentalist and singer, specialising in jazz, joins the fragments of medieval music with her amplified spinet to create, in harmony with the singers, a very distinctive world, bridging the sounds of centuries past and those of today.
This programme thus offers music that goes far beyond its original liturgical or utilitarian function. The ancient notations become the anchor for a contemporary concert experience — atmospheric, expressive, emotionally vibrant. It is music one might imagine in a film: shimmering with mystery, tension and tenderness. Born of fragments dating back centuries, it is invited to revive — and awaken — a space where the audience’s imagination itself becomes part of the composition.
