L'écho d'Orphée offers a look at music from the 10th to the 12th century, a period too often regarded today as the 'Dark Ages'. Here, Per-Sonat contrasts the Carolingian Renaissance, a period of renewal and homage to Greco-Latin culture, with the myth of Orpheus, who laments the death of his wife Eurydice and descends into the Underworld to save her.
We will hear the earliest surviving polyphonic liturgical chants, taken from the Winchester Tropary, as well as organa improvised in the practice of the musica enchiriadis, a study manual for singers dating from the early 10th century. We will also hear the lament of Petrus Abaelardus and the odes of the ancient poet Horace, set to music once again in the Middle Ages. To accompany the voices, the ensemble has chosen instruments from the Carolingian period, as represented in the Utrecht and Stuttgart psalters, including the cytara - a long-necked lute - the lyre and the harp.
