This project brings together four musicians from ApotropaïK and three specialists in Arabo-Andalusian music. Together, they have come up with a creation that combines exchange and cross-fertilisation, in the spirit of Al-Andalous.
Inspired by Spanish and North African musical jousts, this show revisits the Cantigas de Santa María, witness to the exchanges between Moorish and Christian musicians in the 13th century.
The artistic approach is based on the similarities between the traditions (scales, rhythms, vocal and instrumental techniques), highlighting both the commonalities and the particularities of the two cultures.
ApotropaïK: This ensemble explores medieval repertoires with a lively, contemporary approach. Its name, derived from the Greek apotropein (to divert), evokes invention through arrangement and cross-fertilisation. Like the gargoyles of our cathedrals, ApotropaïK seeks to dispel preconceived ideas to reveal surprising, contemporary medieval music.
