Come and explore the Purpurkopf site and chat with members of the Club Vosgien who are working to preserve and restore this historic site.
Archaeological excavations carried out since 2022 by Archéologie d’Alsace, with the help of volunteers from the Club Vosgien du Purpurkopf, have unearthed a castrum dating from the 9th–10th centuries. It has been identified as a residence of the ancestors of Pope Leo IX, which would make it the oldest castle in Alsace.
The fortified building measures approximately 19 m long by 12 m wide, with walls around 2 m thick and an apparent height of 2 m. The building’s original height is estimated at between 9 and 10 metres, taking into account the timber structure and the gable roof.
Crossbow bolts and arrowheads were discovered during excavations, likely indicating a military function. The building is also surrounded by a wall, confirming its defensive nature.
The site was also occupied during the Roman period, but the exact nature of this occupation remains unknown today.
The site is freely accessible and can only be reached on foot (approximately 5 km round trip). Volunteers offer a guided tour starting from the car park at a place called Saegmuhl (GPS: 48.491101, 7.349754)
