Die Ursprünge des Heiligtums reichen mindestens bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurück. Eine Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1505 erwähnt bereits einen Hüter des Heiligtums, der die seinen Vorgängern gewährten Privilegien genoss.
Das Kloster, das heute von der von Alfons von Liguori gegründeten Kongregation der Redemptoristen bewohnt wird, ist zugleich ein bedeutender Wallfahrtsort zu Ehren Unserer Lieben Frau von den Sieben Schmerzen. Diese Wallfahrten wurden nur während Kriegs- oder Besatzungszeiten unterbrochen und anschließend rasch wieder aufgenommen, insbesondere zum Fest Mariä Geburt.
Das Heiligtum steht seit 1965 unter Denkmalschutz.
